What goes around goes around, again and again

A public relations colleague of mine made a tweet on Twitter yesterday about some work with elephants and a circus. No, seriously, sometimes you just can’t make this stuff up.

Anyway, her tweet reminded me of a funny definition of public relations I’ve often shared with my journalism and public relations students at Michigan State University.

I emailed it to her and she responded that she’d heard it before and loved it. A few hours later, she sent me a tweet about how our “conversation” had prompted her to blog about the topic. In her blog, she gave me credit for prompting the blog entry, and identified me via a link to my personal blog, 5Ws.

So, in the course of a simple conversation about an old, funny analogy, technology came into play numerous times.

A tweet led to an email, which led to a blog post that linked to another blog and the post was announced via a tweet, which has now been blogged about, and this blog post will be tweeted about, posted on Facebook and sent out via FriendFeed.

It’s almost enough to make your head spin. Or you can just sit back and marvel at how connected everything is in the world of online communication. I opt for sittin’ back and marveling.

  1. Glad I helped prompt a blog post idea!! It is amazing the way we connect and link to each other through various forms of social networks. My how times have changed..even since I started in this career 2 short years ago!

  2. Go State! As a MSU grad it’s good to know we’re leading the digital charge.

The beauty of social media is the connectedness and how one thing can lead to another, to another, to another and before you know it an amazing conversation evolves.

I also think, it’s that quick evolution of a conversation that has made many corporations so nervous about social media. They can’t move fast enough to respond to or participate in the evolution.
