Bloggers Breaking Bands
The music industry is in the midst of making a 360 degree turn and with it goes the way that bands try to become successful. The old goal was to try and get the attention of major record labels. Of course, this is still a goal for many artists and bands, but there is a stepping stone involved in the process that was not previously around. This step is getting your music onto blogs. Music blogs such as Stereogum, Aquarium Drunkard, and My Old Kentucky Blog all post mp3’s of up-and-coming bands. Tons of music fans look to these bloggers to find out about new and hip music.
The New Rockstar Philosophy tells the story of how the incredibly popular, indie band, Vampire Weekend, rose to fame so quickly and how they got the attention of the major labels through music blogs.
Should these bloggers be compensated in some way???

I think bloggers are compensated as they build a reputation for promoting great music. They’ll create more traffic because of their taste-making ability and thus, create more advertising revenue potential.
More bands should tap the power of the music blogger. If you’ve got something good and fresh to offer the world, the bloggers will take notice.

Yes, you are definitely right about the bloggers receiving compensation by means of increased traffic leading to a higher potential for ad revenue, but how about the blogger getting a cut of the sale of the music?
Ad revenue is extremely nice, but these bloggers are acting as A&R, PR, and Marketing execs for these artists. I just think they deserve something a little more.
